Course Overview
Certificate II & III Information Technology
Courses within the Information Technology Curriculum Framework provide an opportunity for students to gain Certificates II and III in Information Technology as part of their HSC. Apart from being nationally recognised, these AQF VET qualifications articulate into higher level qualifications in ICT which students may pursue post-school.
Certificate II provides foundation general computing and employment skills that enable participation in an information technology environment in any industry. Certificate III provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in introductory ICT ‘technical’ functions. It is designed to support information activities in the workplace and to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT ‘user’, giving employees a degree of confidence in an individual’s usefulness in the workplace. The inclusion of courses in information technology in the HSC based on industry-recognised AQF VET qualifications will allow students to access both long-term and short-term employment opportunities.

Software Design and Development
For the purposes of the Software Design and Development Stage 6 Syllabus, software design and development refers to the creativity, knowledge, values and communication skills required to develop computer programs. The subject provides students with a systematic approach to problem-solving, an opportunity to be creative, excellent career prospects and interesting content. Software development is a distinctive field within the Computing discipline. Stage 6 students who wish to move into this field are at an advantage if they understand the field.
There are many different approaches that can be taken to develop software. An understanding of these and the situations in which they are applied is essential in software development. So too is an understanding of how hardware and software are interrelated and need each other to function. In order to develop solutions that meet the needs of those who will use them, communication, personal and team skills are required by the developers. Together, these considerations provide the basis for the course.
